Five stories that are considered to be Dostoevsky's best: "A Nasty Anecdote", the title story, and three stories from THE DIARY OF A WRITER. Many of Dostoevski's stories concentrate on decisive moments in the meagre existences of the poor and downtrodden. His four-year sentence to hard labor in Siberia, the result of his revolutionary activities, developed in Dostoevski an appreciation for the inner life of the common man that he never lost, and that is reflected in nearly all of his work.
