Illiteracy in America

Ten percent of adult Americans are totally illiterate; they cannot read the word danger on a warning sign or stop on a traffic sign. Some 45 million, almost 20 percent of the population, are functionally illiterate; they cannot read well enough to meet the practical needs of daily life. Worldwide, the greatest number of illiterates are women; 35 percent of women cannot read and write as compared to 20 percent of men.
