The Spyglass: A Story of Faith

There once was a king who ruled over a darkened kingdom. Yet when a traveler showed the king his land and people through the lens of a spyglass, the kingdom was restored to glory. How the king comes to realize that with a leap of faith his kingdom can be restored and made real is at the heart of this moving new fable by master storyteller Richard Paul Evans. Full-color illustrations.

"I ordered this book to use during the first week of school with my 3rd graders, as preparation for creating our classroom rules. As Paula Denton states in her new book, The Power of Our Words (a Responsive Classroom Book), "Just as the old man (in the Magic Spyglass) used a magical spyglass to help the king envision the possibilities for greatness within his kingdom, teachers can use language to help students imagine themselves behaving and achieving in ways beyond their current reality. ... "What do you see through the spyglass?" I have asked children after reading this story to them. "Let's pretend we're looking through magic spyglasses at our classroom. We're looking at our classroom when it's a safe and welcoming place for everybody and we're all doing our best learning. What kinds of things do you see? What are you doing?" I'll be doing just that, and was able to buy a real spyglass just like the one in the book online without any problem. Good Character Education books are hard to find, and this one is very inspiring, with beautiful illustrations too! Before kids are ready to help create -- and then to follow -- classroom rules, they need to believe in them, to realize what the rules can help them to accomplish."
