Stone Angel

Hagar Shipley, of Manawaka, Canada, is 90 years old. Blind, proud, desperately unhappy, she has spent her life denying her emotions and struggling to be wholly independent of people. As she nears the end of her life, the cracks in her self-sufficient facade are widening; the novel chronicles Hagar's life and the developments that lead to her eventual realization that she cannot remain so insular.
