he two great novels by the Brontë sisters: Charlotte's JANE EYRE and Emily's WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Charlotte Brontë's first novel, based in part on the author's own days in a brutal boarding school, tells the story of a spirited governess and her employer--the Byronic, brooding Mr. Rochester. This story of a plain, impoverished young woman who defies male expectations and the social conventions to become a strong and fulfilled adult has become an enduring classic. Emily Bronte's only novel, drawing on the Gothic tradition, is a tale of obsession. Set in the Yorkshire moors, it tells the story of Catherine Earnshaw, a wilfull and romantic girl brought up to be a lady, and Heathcliff, the Byronic, brooding, mysterious gypsy orphan. The relationship between these two remains tempestuous to its end, and affects future generations of these complicated families. The novel's complex structure and point of view were ahead of their time.
