Since 1931 when Babar the Elephant fled the jungle and entered Western civilization in Jean de Brunhoff's book, Babar's adventures have been chronicled in 36 popular volumes to date--and translated into 17 languages, animated, recorded on tape, and set to music. Author Nicholas Fox Weber worked with Laurent to reconstruct the genesis of Babar and his shy queen, Celeste, and to explore the themes that have made the Babar books so enduringly successful. The illustrations include never-before-published Babar watercolors by both the de Brunhoffs as well as family photographs.
